Founded by the four Whitt sisters, Sharon, Marcia, Gail and Sandra, Virgilina Distilling Company is the first and only four sister-owned farm distillery in the nation. The first distillery in Southern Virginia since prohibition, our spirits are made right here in Virgilina, VA from heirloom Hickory King corn grown on our Hyco farm. Clear spring water is drawn on our Christie farm from one of the exact springs where Granddaddy made his fine White Lightning. Our spirits are based on traditional pot still methods - batch by batch and bottled by hand.
Our distillery is located in the W.D. Amis Mercantile building, built in 1885 to service the town and the Virgilina Mining District's copper and gold mining industry. Visit our gift shop and step back in time. While you are here, tour our distillery and see our beautifully crafted, hand-hammered copper pot still and experience a real distillery in operation. Be sure to sign up for our hands-on bottling days and distilling classes - dates to be announced soon.
Back in the day, Virgilina was a wet town in a dry area. The Jones Distillery, the Shoemaker Distillery, and the Puryear Distillery thrived here. Having a reputation as a rowdy town, Virgilina was no place for ladies on a Saturday night when the miners and farmers visited the saloons.
Around here, rumor has it that the distilleries paid for the sidewalks and the ladies refused to walk on them.
